Magdalen Street Meander
Magdalen Street Meander
A Thursday evening you'll remember. Meander down Magdalen Street as the sun sets, with art historian, local history geek, storyteller and forest school leader Roxanne Matthews. Bring your friend, your aunt, your dog, come alone, pocket your stories and your wonderings to share.
We'll start in a mayor's house, admire the river by one of the oldest crossing points in the city, meet a ducked woman then wind our way to the old medieval Magdalen Gate, jump the Anglo Saxon ditch, meet the ghosts of five lost churches, a doll's factory, two revolutionary women and two anchorites, a very famous Archbishop and of course a half demolished 1960s dream.
Roxanne is a long time guide of the Assembly House, baked at the Sainsbury Centre School of Art History, trained at the Wallace Collection. Local to the end of the street, she's a charismatic and warm guide to have on any journey.
Once a rushcutter's inn, the Artichoke have invited us to quench our thirst and reserved us a table in their fine establishment once we're done, and Merchant's House have reserved us a table in the courtyard from 6.30 if you want to bookend the experience with beverages. What better way to spend a Thursday evening, and you can be in bed by 9.30pm.
The tour will start promptly at 7pm. We can't wait to see you.
