Sacred Sounds Drum Making Workshop

A one-day ceremonial drum making experience with Ren from By The Tree.

Deep within the peaceful surroundings of Wrongs Covert Woodland in Norfolk, you are invited to step away from the busyness of everyday life and into a day of creativity, connection and remembrance.

Together we will create a traditional frame drum using ethically sourced natural materials, stretching the hide by hand, weaving the lacing, and bringing each drum into being with patience, intention and care.

This is more than simply making an instrument. Across many cultures, the drum has been regarded as a companion, a guide and a keeper of prayers. Throughout the day we will honour the materials, the woodland around us, and the unique journey of each drum as it finds its own voice.

Throughout the day we will work beneath the trees, accompanied by birdsong, the changing light of the woodland and the quiet rhythms of nature. The woodland itself becomes part of the experience, gently reminding us that everything is created in relationship. As we gather in this ancient place, there is an invitation to slow down, to listen deeply, and to create in harmony with the living world around us.

No previous experience is needed. You will be gently guided through every stage of the process, from preparing the hide and lacing your drum to creating the handle and caring for your finished companion.

As your drum begins to dry over the days that follow, it will continue to settle into its final form. Once ready, you will be invited to awaken its voice in your own time, beginning the next chapter in your relationship together. Participants will be encouraged to reflect on and record their own experience of the drum's creation should they wish, creating a personal record of its journey into being.

You will leave with:

• Your own handcrafted 14" or 16" ceremonial frame drum

• A handmade beater

• A Drum Care Guide

• The knowledge and confidence to continue your relationship with your drum

Whether you feel called by the rhythm, the woodland, or simply a desire to create something deeply personal with your own hands, you are warmly welcomed. You are not simply making a drum. You are beginning a relationship.

About your facilitator Ren Thalen

I am an intuitive maker and practitioner, creating and working with sacred tools in connection with the land, spirit and deep listening. My work is guided by feeling, presence and trust; holding space for others to connect with their own inner knowing and natural wisdom.

I have been working with sacred hoop drums since 2016 and have learnt a lot about myself, nature and rhythm in the process.

Nestled in the reed beds and ancient woodland cradling the Wensum, 12 miles NW of Norwich, it is both accessible to the city and completely free of city distractions. Your booking can be refunded within 2 weeks of the workshop date, please contact us at treowforestschool@gmail.com. After that date, we regret that we're unable to process refunds due to the cost of materials.

In the event of very high winds or electric storms, we'll reschedule dates. If you're unable to make the new date, refunds will be available.
