Magdalen Street Meander

Fri 18 Sep 2026 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Merchant's House, NR3 1LJ

A Friday evening you'll remember! Meander down Magdalen Street as the sun sets, with art historian, local history geek, storyteller and forest school leader Roxanne Matthews. Bring your friend, your aunt, your dog, come alone, with a pocket full of stories and wonderings to share.

We'll start in a mayor's house, admire the river by one of the oldest crossing points in the city, meet a ducked woman then wind our way to the old medieval Magdalen Gate, jump the Anglo Saxon ditch, meet the ghosts of five lost churches, a dolls factory, two revolutionary women and two anchorites, a very famous Archbishop and of course a half demolished 1960s dream; RIP Anglia Square.

Roxanne is a long time historical guide at the Assembly House, trained at the Sainsbury Centre School of Art History and the Wallace Collection. She's a local to the end of Magdalen Street, and is a charismatic and warm guide to have on any journey.

The Artichoke pub, once Leper House (no longer contagious), have invited us to quench our thirst and reserved us a table in their fine establishment once we're done, and The Merchant's House have reserved us a table in the courtyard from 6.30 if you want to bookend the experience with beverages.

The tour will start promptly at 7pm, we can't wait to see you.
