Following the launch of the exhibition Beyond Form: Lines of Abstraction, 1950 - 1970, guest curator for Turner Contemporary, writer and art historian Flavia Frigeri invites you to join her in conversation with art critic and author Lauren Elkin, as they discuss and celebrate the groundbreaking women artists featured in the exhibition. Learn how the artists used a language of abstraction to transcend geographical and cultural boundaries and why their contributions to the global discourse on abstraction matter.

The event will be filmed and released via POW Thanet and Turner Contemporary's digital channels.

About Flavia Frigeri

Flavia Frigeri is an art historian, lecturer, and ‘Chanel Curator for the Collection’ at the National Portrait Gallery, London. From 2016 to 2020 she was a Teaching Fellow in the History of Art Department UCL and a member of faculty at Sotheby’s Institute, London. Previously she was ‘Curator, International Art’ at Tate Modern, where she co-curated The World Goes Pop (2015), and was responsible for Henri Matisse: The Cut-Outs (2014), Paul Klee: Making Visible (2013) and Ruins in Reverse (2013). She is the author of Pop Art and Women Artists both in Thames & Hudson’s Art Essentials series and the co-editor of a volume of collected essays, New Histories of Art in the Global Postwar Era: Multiple Modernisms (Routledge, 2021). She is the guest curator of Beyond Form: Lines of Abstraction, 1950-1970 at Turner Contemporary and of the forthcoming retrospective of Maria Helena Vieira da Silva at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.

About Lauren Elkin

Lauren Elkin is the author of several books, including Art Monsters: Unruly Bodies in Feminist Art, No. 91/92: Notes on a Parisian Commute and Flâneuse: Women Walk the City. Her essays have appeared in Granta, the London Review of Books, Frieze, Art Review, Harper's, Aperture, Tate Etc, and the New York Times, where she has profiled artists like Cornelia Parker and Sutapa Biswas, and she has contributed to catalogues for artists including Sarah Lucas, Lubaina Himid, Vlatka Horvat, Hannah Starkey, and Caroline Walker. She is also an award-winning translator, most recently of Simone de Beauvoir's previously unpublished novel The Inseparables; upcoming translations include Constance Debré's Nom and Marie-Laure Bernadec's biography of Louise Bourgeois. Her next book, a novel entitled Scaffolding, will be published by Chatto & Windus in June 2024. She lives in London.
