RYA First Aid Course

Essential first aid skills for anyone who spends time on the water.

Accidents afloat are thankfully rare, but knowing what to do in an emergency can make all the difference. This practical one-day RYA First Aid course covers essential first aid from a boating perspective, helping you develop the knowledge and confidence to respond when help may not be immediately available.

It's suitable for sailors, powerboaters, paddleboarders, cruising crews, club volunteers and anyone who spends time on or around the water. No previous first aid experience is required.

What you'll learn

• CPR and AED use, including the drowning protocol
• The recovery position in confined spaces
• Bleeding, shock and head injuries
• Choking and breathing difficulties
• Cold water shock and hypothermia
• Seasickness and dehydration
• Burns, fractures, seizures and other common medical emergencies
• First aid equipment for your boat
• Requesting medical advice or assistance by marine VHF radio
• Preparing for the evacuation of a casualty afloat

The RYA First Aid course is MCA approved and meets the first aid requirements for RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster and Advanced Powerboat certificates of competence, as well as certain types of commercial work afloat.

Twickenham Yacht Club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre on the River Thames in south-west London.

Please note that we schedule a course every Spring ahead of the season, but can arrange further courses as and when we have six or more participants.
