Colonial Mobilities in the US, UK, and Palestine

Colonial structures shape how we move, who gets to move and whose movement is constrained, and when movement for one comes at the expense of another. To think about mobility justice, in other words, is to think about empire. And vice versa.

This public conversation brings two modes of mobility, two time periods, and two geographies into conversation to consider the relationship between colonialism and mobility. Dr. Nathan Cardon (University of Birmingham) will offer some remarks on the global bicycle boom of the late nineteenth century, and how it linked imperial networks between the British empire at its height and an emerging US empire then on the rise. Dr. Dani Abulhawa (University of Leed)will then speak about how skateboarding in Palestine can constitute liberatory practice under colonial occupation. Nathan and Dani’s presentations will be followed by a comment from two local activists, Sarah Ali (CIVIC SQUARE) and Manuela Galetto (Big Ride for Palestine) followed by conversation between the panelists and with the audience.
