Why your supporters are wealthier than you think, and what it means for fundraising

Wed 24 Jan 2024 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM GMT Online, Zoom

There are more people in the UK who own their own home outright than who have mortgages. The Great Wealth Transfer means Generation X, the children of Baby Boomers, are due to inherit £327 billion over the next 10 years. Savings rates went up 25% during the pandemic and are still above pre-pandemic averages.

Despite high and growing levels of poverty and inequality a large proportion of the UK population have benefited from a wealth boom since 2010. These groups overlap with traditional charity supporters, helping to explain why UK giving has remained resilient despite the pandemic and cost of living crisis. And the wealth boom is continuing, with millions of people due to inherit from Baby Boomers over the coming years.

This means that for most charities our supporters are wealthier than we may think. This interactive insight session will explore these wealth trends in more detail, and highlight the fundraising opportunities they offer for your charity. The session will cover practical steps you can take to benefit from this wealth boom.

The insights session is on Weds 24th January 2024 from 10.15am to 11.45am on Zoom. The session will be recorded and the link to the recording and the slides shared afterwards.

What this course will cover

This course will cover the key financial and socio-economic trends driving who holds wealth in the UK, and how wealth is being passed down generations as a result of the Baby Boomer generation starting to pass away. The course will explore what this Great Wealth Transfer means for fundraising, and how charities can best position themselves to respond. The course will look at the impact of the pandemic on people’s personal wealth, savings rates and financial health and explain how this is reflected in charitable giving.

The course will give practical ideas for fundraisers on how they can best position their charity to take advantage of the opportunities offered by these financial trends, and how they can best work with their supporters, many of whom will be wealthier than the charity may think.

The course will be particularly relevant for Individual Giving, Major Donor, Legacy and in Memory teams but also those working on fundraising strategy and planning.
