Umbraco Search & Containers Workshop

Join us in Birmingham on September 17th for a deep dive into the new Umbraco Search abstractions & containerisation support that launched with V17+!

This is a hands-on, practical workshop – you won’t just be watching demos! You’ll be working directly with code and will leave with real-world working examples running on your own machine, ready to take back to your team or project.

Coffee / tea and lunch will be provided to keep you fuelled throughout the day. There will also be plenty of opportunities to network with fellow attendees before and after the event.

Structure

The day is structured into focused chapters, each led by Umbraco community experts:

1. Introduction to Umbraco.Cms.Search
We take a look at the fundamentals of the new Search APIs, how they differ from the previous Examine based approach, and we build our own site search implementation based on Clean Starterkit. 

2. Customising indexing, advanced search, and facets
We progress with learning how to customise search indexes, to support advanced search features with custom Filters and Sorting behaviour. Next we'll implement Facets to add powerful filtering functionality into our search.

3. Introduction to Umbraco in containers
After lunch we'll get a crash-course on containerisation: what it means in practice, what's needed to host an Umbraco site, and ways to deploy them into production. 

4. Running Umbraco with Aspire
We'll introduce you to Microsoft's Aspire platform as a way to streamline your Umbraco development alongside improved telemetry. We will walk through converting our existing Umbraco site into an Aspire hosted project with all the bells & whistles!

5. Using external search providers (Elasticsearch)
To culminate all the skills we've learnt we will add Elasticsearch to our containerised setup, and swap our search implementation to use the Elasticsearch indexes!

Requirements

You will need:

• A laptop (Windows or MacOS) & charger
• An IDE like Visual Studio, VS Code, or Jetbrains Rider
• The latest .NET 10 installed
