Is it time to start writing your education stories?
Education writers play a powerful role in creating a more just future in schools. We document powerful and subversive teaching practices, we connect theory to strategy, and we craft narratives of students and teachers that refuse dehumanization. This workshop is for educators who want a supportive space to practice writing towards equity and justice in schools, whether that’s in your newsletter, blog, an article you’re pitching to an ed publication, a book proposal you’re working on, or simply your own personal writing projects.
This isn’t a workshop about teaching writing (although you may pick up some things you can use with your students!). This is a workshop for your own writing about your experiences as an educator—how to get started, how to elevate your craft, and how to approach publication.
The experience:
This is a small group cohort (capped at 10 participants). We'll build a community together!
We'll meet twice a week for 4 weeks on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 to 2 Eastern time: July 14, 16, 21, 23, 28, 30, and August 4 and 6.
We’ll read exemplars of powerful education writing, generate with writing prompts, and workshop drafts/give feedback to one another. There will be a little bit of “homework” between sessions so set aside time to write and read.
While most of our time will focus on the craft of our writing, we'll also have some time and resources set aside for the "businessy" side of things, including where and how to submit your writing, the current education publishing landscape, and more.
A note about AI:
I'm expecting writers in this cohort to do their own writing, revising, and editing. Please don't sign up for this if you use generative AI as part of your writing process. I also commit to not using AI for any part of planning or facilitation! (Or anything else)
About the instructor:
I'm the author of two books for teachers, the bestselling Equity-Centered Trauma-Informed Education and its follow-up Becoming an Everyday Changemaker. My education writing has appeared in Edutopia, School Library Journal, EL Magazine, English Journal, Urban Education, and more. More about me at unconditionallearning.org
Access:
We meet on Zoom which has a few built-in accessibility tools including auto-generated live captions. Facilitation moves I do for access include clear agendas and expectations, freedom to participate with voice or in the chat, no requirement to turn your camera on. If you have additional access needs or questions, please email me. Alex@UnconditionalLearning.org
