Social-emotional learning can be a powerful tool for humanizing education, but sometimes, well, it sucks. SEL sucks when it's overly scripted and doesn't feel authentic, when it imposes norms on our students uncritically, and when it feels like just one more thing we have to check off on the never ending list of initiatives.
In this workshop, learn about ways that SEL can actually feel useful, authentic, and humanizing. Alex will give some frames and ways of thinking about SEL with a focus on how SEL can center humanity in school, and we'll do some collaborative brainstorming and resource-sharing of ideas and examples. As always, Alex will provide a resource list for further learning, and the session will model some of the practices we're talking about.
