Essential knowledge and skills for anyone supporting a person in special needs education and care.

Rapport-Based Communication is a simple yet deep practice to help develop rapport and relationships with a person with learning disabilities, autism or dementia.  Through insightful presentations, enjoyable games and group discussion, this straightforward course is suitable for family members, caregivers, teachers, teaching assistants, managers and clinical staff. Participants will learn:

  • the nature of rapport and why rapport is important in building relationships
  • how rapport meets fundamental psychological needs and increases wellbeing
  • a straightforward practice that is easy to understand and easy to remember
  • how to help others to do rapport-based communication
  • how the practice can help to solve personal challenges

The course is facilitated by Matt Laurie, experienced consultant trainer. Matt has worked with people with special needs for 20 years and now delivers training in care and education settings around the UK. He worked for the Hesley Group Autism service for 10 years and was responsible for teaching Intensive Interaction and Musical Interaction to care staff on induction training and at a service wide level. Alongside his consultancy work, Matt still develops the Rapport-based communication provision in Woolley Wood Special School in Sheffield, where he co-ordinates a community of teachers and teaching assistants to develop the practice.

"Thanks Matt, really enjoyed the Rapport Based Communication online event. Clear easy to follow steps to build and nurture rapport and also to understand the nature of rapport." Lucy Harrison, Certitude London, April 2020

"I found the training really informative! I have been working with children and adults, who are identified as having special needs, for the past twenty years but have always felt inferior to my colleagues as I have learnt through experience rather than having a degree. This year I decided to learn more about the theory of what I do to be able to talk the talk and your course was perfect! "  Participant on Rapport-Based Communication Online, April 2020

This was my first experience of using Zoom and I felt that you put everyone at ease immediately and everyone was friendly and keen to share and listen.
