Unexpected Music is a mini experimental music festival in the historic context and unique acoustic setting of the Maverick Concert Hall in Woodstock, NY. The day will feature a diverse group of artists including Laraaji, Tyondai Braxton, Sarah Hennies, Will Epstein Ben Vida, Evan Shornstein (Photay), Jefre Cantu-Ledesma whose work probes the realms of acoustic phenomena, improvisation, electro-acoustic experiments and spiritual transcendence through sound. The performances will span the day from afternoon to evening on September 2nd presenting an eclectic but engagingly coherent invocation of these methodologies. The location of the event at Maverick Concert Hall is essential as the artists will engage with the avant-garde history of this century old venue and explore it within a contemporary context. John Cage's 4'33" premiered at Maverick in 1952 and exploited the unique semi open-air architecture of the venue which allows a diverse flow of sound in and through the venue--an integral property of the environment that will also inform these performances.
