Join us for the next instalment of the Psychology Cultures Seminar with Dr Carlos Amartey and Dr Fiammetta Rocca from the Helen Bamber Foundation — an organisation dedicated to providing specialist, long-term care for survivors of trafficking and torture. In this session, Dr Amartey and Dr Rocca will explore the vital role of Clinical Psychology in supporting people from displaced communities, sharing insights from their impactful work at the Foundation.

Dr Carlos Amartey

  • Carlos is a Clinical Psychologist with 9 years’ experience working mainly in the NHS within primary and secondary care services for adults with a spectrum of mental health difficulties, as well as adults and young people adjusting to the impact of physical health and neurological conditions. Carlos currently works in a Community Mental Health Team with adults with severe and enduring mental health difficulties. He also works for the Helen Bamber Foundation, with displaced people have faced various human rights violations including torture, human trafficking, persecution, gender-based violence and domestic violence. Carlos is passionate about working with people who have faced displacement, community psychology and narrative ideas, promoting trauma-informed practices and using trauma-focused interventions. Carlos also enjoys co-teaching within the community psychology module on the Leicester DClinPsy course on supporting refugee and asylum-seeking people.

Dr Fiammetta Rocca

  • Fiammetta is a Clinical Psychologist who trained between Italy and the UK. She has experience working in the NHS with different client groups, including young people, survivors of trauma, people with complex emotional needs, individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, older adults, and women and families during the perinatal period. Fiammetta has also worked in drug and alcohol services within the third sector and contributed to developing a trauma pathway for people who are using substances. In her role with the Helen Bamber Foundation and British Red Cross partnership, she works therapeutically with people seeking asylum and refugees who present with trauma-related distress. Fiammetta is passionate about trauma-informed care, particularly with populations who are marginalised and routinely excluded from services. She has a special interest in trauma and trauma-focused interventions and has contributed to research and service evaluations in this area. She has delivered teaching on perinatal mental health and substance use awareness on the Trent DClinPsy course.
