Identifying aquatic macroinvertebrates – basics through to species level resolution

Brief description of content: This session, led by Dr Kate Mathers, aims to develop skills in basic taxonomy and identification of aquatic macroinvertebrates for students with varying backgrounds and experiences. It will achieve this by providing practical experience of undertaking macroinvertebrate identification. The course is open to all levels although we anticipate being of most benefit to novices or those with a little experience.
The training session will:
- Provide a basic overview of macroinvertebrate taxonomy;
- Outline key differences in aquatic macroinvertebrate groups;
- Highlight the importance of taxonomic resolution in the consideration of ecological studies (including biomonitoring indices);
- Provide case studies of species level identification.
All equipment will be provided for the course.
Where: Loughborough University (https://www.lboro.ac.uk/about/location/) in E building (number 60 on the campus map / Geography department) in room E.014. (Please note, there may be outdoor work involved in this course, please dress with this in mind).
When: Wednesday 15th November 10-1pm. There will be an opportunity after lunch to ask us any questions or go through anything specific, but this is optional.
Refreshments: There are a number of places offering food and drink nearby.
