Think about the most inspiring and impactful scientist you know. Chances are, they have an extremely useful hidden skill that isn't just being technically brilliant: They are probably a good storyteller.
Scientists have to tell stories all the time, both about themselves and their work, in written and oral forms - it is an essential part of communicating effectively. All research has to follow a narrative - Why are you doing it? What does it mean? What are the benefits to society if you get it right, or the risks if we don't act? But many of us struggle to find the right words to communicate the great things we're doing.
History and experience shows us that if you aren't able to engage audiences, stakeholders, policymakers and even yourself with the narrative of you and your work, you will struggle to make the desired impact on those around you - even if your science is brilliant. Conversely, those who master the art of storytelling are able to captivate their colleagues, potential employers and collaborators, stakeholders and the public, helping the storyteller to become more successful and their message more memorable.
So if you want to learn how to tell captivating, authentic stories to show your science (and yourself) off, this is the workshop for you. Run by ex-BBC Journalist Simon Hall (Simon Hall - Communication training, coaching and consultancy from Cambridge - thetvdetective.com) who is Course Leader in Compelling Communication Skills at the University of Cambridge, you will benefit from Simon's warm and friendly approach with 20+ years of experience in training people just like you.
