Trauma & identity: an understanding of the Israel-Palestine conflict through the experience of medical and mental health care
Speakers:
Professor Saleem Haj-Yahia: cardiac surgeon in Herzliya and dean of Hebron Medical School
Dr David Senesh: clinical psychologist in Jaffa and Berlin
Through his experience as an Israeli cardiac surgeon and a leader of Palestinian medical education on the West Bank, Saleem will explore the challenges facing Palestinian doctors reconciling their clinical work, political commitments and their own current and intergenerational experience of trauma, as well as the vulnerability arising from their Palestinian identity.
David will articulate the effects of individual, family, communal and inter-generational trauma from his clinical practice, exploring how these become obstacles to identifying with the humanity and rights of Palestinians.
