Note - doors will open for this event at 1:45. So please come along then to grab a refreshment before we kick off at 2pm. The presentations and Q&A will likely conclude at 3:30pm, but we have the space until 4pm for mingling and networking.

The Bristol Poverty Institute (BPI) invites you to join us for our Seedcorn Fund showcase. The event will kick off with an introduction to the BPI and our Seedcorn Fund. Presentations from our three 2024-25 Seedcorn projects will then follow with a chance for Q&A. Refreshments will be available, and there will be an opportunity to mingle, discuss, and network at the end. So, do come along if you’re interested in finding out about the innovative projects from our second Seedcorn cohort, and/or if you’re interested in applying for future rounds of funding (availability of future rounds to be confirmed). This event is primarily aimed at University of Bristol (UoB) academics at all career stages, but all are welcome to attend.

Our interdisciplinary Seedcorn Fund was created to support our academics to explore emerging research areas, break down disciplinary boundaries, and develop new partnerships. All projects must involve academics from at least two different schools at the University, and must be focused on issues around poverty and social justice. The fund is intended to be a pipeline to developing larger funding bids relating to the analysis, understanding, and ultimate reduction of poverty.

The three projects we’ll be hearing from in the Showcase are:

Ultra-Processed Foods and Health Inequalities: A data-driven approach to understanding socioeconomic disparities in diet

  • Principle Investigator: Dr. Alisha Suhag, Senior Research Associate in Health Data Science, Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol
  • Co-Investigator: Professor Jeff Brunstrom, Professor of Experimental Psychology, Faculty of Health and Life Sciences, University of Bristol
  • Co-Investigator: Dr Anya Skatova, Senior Research Fellow, Bristol Medical School, University of Bristol

Poverty and financial wellbeing in the UK: an intersectional approach

  • Co-Investigator: Mrs Katie Cross, Senior Research Associate, School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol
  • Co-Investigator: Mr Jamie Evans, Research Fellow, School of Geographical Sciences, University of Bristol

Low wage work in the education system: food banks and food insecurity
