What did you mean? How to give and receive feedback

Feedback can be a minefield. Done badly, it demoralises the recipient and damages that relationship. Done well, it improves work, builds trust, and strengthens research culture. This interactive session introduces practical frameworks for giving clear, constructive, and actionable feedback. The goal is to create a supportive culture where everyone feels confident having honest, productive conversations, whatever your role.
Through short exercises we will explore real-world scenarios such as:
· How quickly should feedback be given?
· What level of detail is actually useful?
· How do you respond if you disagree with or don’t understand the feedback?
· How do you constructively address underperformance?
This session is perfect for all researchers at any career stage, including PhD students, and professional services and technical staff.
This session is run by Dr David Jones. David is a research entomologist. After four postdoc contracts in the UK and overseas, he is now a Scientific Associate at the Natural History Museum in London and an external lecturer at Imperial College. For the last 12 years David has also been spending half his time running his own training company, delivering workshops at 16 universities. His workshops include How to Write Research Papers, How to Peer Review Manuscripts for Journals, and Presentation Skills.
