UC Alumni Discuss Geopolitics, Real Estate and Social Enterprise

Thu Jun 13, 2024 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM CEST El Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, 08002

University of California alumni, students and friends are invited to come together for a stimulating series of talks featuring a group of successful, academics from the UC alumni community based in Barcelona.

Our first speaker, Jordi Gual (UC Berkeley) will be discussing Economic instability, international tensions and the speed of technological innovation put the welfare state and the stability of labor markets at risk. In "Trust is priceless", Jordi Gual reveals how these disturbances have an impact on people's life expectations and their trust in capitalism and public policy. His conciliatory proposal for the reconstruction of trust relies on the successful management of economic policies, on setting companies at the heart of this regeneration and, fundamentally, on returning to the spirit of community. Only in this way, with humanistic values, will it be possible to guarantee the functioning of a renewed capitalism. Jordi is Chairman of the Board of Directors of VidaCaixa since April 2021. Between 2016 and 2021, he served as Chairman of CaixaBank. Prior to this appointment, he was Chief Economist and Head of Strategic Planning and Research for CaixaBank and Director-General of Planning and Strategic Development for CriteriaCaixa.

Our second speaker, Carles Vergara (UC Berkeley) talk is titled: "From Ground Up: Real Estate Trends Transforming Cities and Lifestyles". Carles is a Professor in the Financial Management Department at IESE Business School. He has worked at Allianz Hedge Fund Partners, Allianz Group, the Center for Transport Innovation, and the European Investment Bank. Carles also has consulting experience in the finance, real estate, engineering, pharmaceutical, retail, and public sectors.

The third speaker is Iñigo Gallo (UCLA) who will discuss "Social Enterprises: A New, Meaningful Way of Doing Business". He received a Ph.D. degree in Management from UCLA Anderson. Since, his work has been published in different refereed and non-refereed journals in marketing and psychology. He has also presented his research at leading conferences in consumer behavior including the Association of Consumer Research and Society of Consumer Psychology.

The event will be moderated by Sebastien Brion (UC Berkeley). Sebastien is a Professor in the Department of Managing People in Organizations at IESE. He holds a Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the Haas School of Business, University of California, Berkeley and a BA in Psychology from Tufts University.
