UC Alumni Sustainability Group Panel on Blue Economy and Dinner
Tue 1 Oct 2024 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM BST
October Gallery, WC1N 3AL
Description
The world's oceans contribute and facilitate many activities that benefit humans, including shipping, renewable energy, fishing, tourism and resource extraction. Collectively these activities make up the Blue Economy, which the World Bank estimates contribute about $1.5 trillion to the global economy (and the OECD believes this figure will double to $3.0 trillion by 2030).
How are these activities developed and managed? What technologies are accelerating change? What can we expect in the near future? And how is climate change impacting the Blue Economy? The panel will seek to answer these questions as they relate to ocean shipping and renewable energy.
Speakers
Dominique Roddier (UC Berkeley '00), CEO of Ocergy, will discuss the opportunities offered by offshore wind energy as new technologies unlock the potential of deep water locations. Ocergy is pioneering the development of floating offshore wind farms through the development of special offshore platforms.
Dr. Kirsi Tikka (UC Berkeley '84, '89), Board Member and Independent Director at Pacific Basin Shipping, Ardmore Shipping and Foreship Engineering, will address the state of shipping today, with a focus on sustainable practices and the challenges faced by the industry. She will cover trends, technologies and regulations that govern the global shipping industry.
Moderated by Andrea Bertolotti (UC Berkeley '93) – Sustainable investor, formerly with BlackRock and Quotient Investors
