Join fellow the University of California Sustainability Network and your UC community for an evening of cinematic wonder and expert insight. The evening begins with a screening of Ocean with David Attenborough — a breathtaking natural history documentary showcasing the planet’s most vibrant marine environments, the creatures within them, and the urgent need to protect our oceans.

Following the film, we’ll welcome Professor Douglas McCauley from UC Santa Barbara, a renowned oceanographer and director of the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory. Professor McCauley will lead a discussion exploring the film’s themes and current challenges in ocean conservation— drawing on his own cutting-edge research and global conservation efforts.

About the Film
Ocean with David Attenborough takes viewers on a stunning visual journey through the world’s marine ecosystems — highlighting coral reefs, open waters, coastal habitats, and deep-ocean mysteries. Combining HD cinematography with Attenborough’s signature narrative, the film celebrates marine biodiversity while emphasising human impacts and the critical importance of stewardship.

About Professor Douglas McCauley

Professor Douglas McCauley is an Associate Professor in Ecology, Evolution, and Marine Biology at UC Santa Barbara and directs the Benioff Ocean Science Laboratory—an applied research centre dedicated to ocean health. He holds dual B.A. degrees in Integrative Biology and Political Science from UC Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Biology from Stanford. His interdisciplinary research has been published in Science and Nature, and fuses ecology, data science, and policy to address global marine conservation challenges.

Tickets are £10 per person, and include a welcome drink on arrival and light bites served throughout the evening.
