Morven McEachern, Professor of Sustainability & Ethics

The British agri-food sector plays a vital role, impacting upon public health, cultural identity, economic stability, and environmental sustainability. Yet despite its significance to each of these areas, food producers report pressurised relationships with manufacturers and retailers, increasing demands from consumers for cheaper food and generally met with political complacency.

In this lecture, Professor Morven McEachern examines the untenable relationships between each of the actors in our food supply chain, arguing instead that the relentless pursuit of cheap food undermines any aspirations for a resilient, secure and sustainable food sector. From a socio-spatial perspective, she will critically analyse the sector’s successes and failings and provide a roadmap for how we might create a more inclusive and sustainable food supply chain that benefits everyone.
