Professor Julieanna Powell-Turner Inaugural lecture

What does it mean to be secure in a world shaped by climate change, environmental pressures, resource constraints and increasing uncertainty? In this inaugural lecture, Professor Julieanna Powell-Turner reflects on a career that has taken her from the defence and national security environment at Shrivenham's Defence Academy of the UK to working with businesses, communities and partners across Chester, Shropshire and the wider region.

Drawing on experiences spanning defence, environmental security, sustainability, innovation and community resilience, the inaugural explores how our understanding of security has evolved. It considers the connections between challenges that can appear very different, from the availability of critical resources and the resilience of national infrastructure to flooding, farming, business resilience and the future of rural communities.

At its heart is a simple question: what are we trying to protect? The lecture argues that responding to the environmental challenges ahead requires us to think not only about protecting systems and infrastructure, but also about people, livelihoods, communities and places.
