Monsters! The Impact of Language and Labelling in Forensic Psychology and True Crime Media
Share this event
Have you heard people referred to as ‘monsters’? Are some people simply ‘evil’? Have you wondered what the impact of language and labelling can have on someone’s future prospects?
Our expert speakers will provide an insight into the potential impacts labelling and language can have in both forensic psychology and true crime media. We will highlight the dramatisation of documentary titles such as ‘Monster’, and discuss how impactful labels may be. Joining the event host, Dr Samantha Walkden, will be Prof(Hon) Geraldine Akerman, who is a HCPC Registered Forensic Psychologist with an extensive background of working with offending populations, and researching the impact of labelling.
Appropriate audience includes those over the age of 16+, current and past students and those in the public. It would be ideal if the audience has experience of watching such shows and has access with social media platforms and streaming platforms. The first half of the event will be a lecture/discussion between Dr Walkden and Prof Akerman, followed by a short break for refreshments. Following this there will be an opportunity for you to ask your questions and engage with some research around this area.
This event will be interactive, allowing the audience to ask any questions, contribute amongst discussions and share their own opinions and thought towards the topic at hand. If you have any questions about the event, then please direct your queries to Dr Samantha Walkden s.walkden@greatermanchester.ac.uk
