Professor Leena Sodha Inaugural Lecture

Actuaries, Academia & Glass Ceilings

In this inaugural lecture, Professor Leena Sodha shares her experiences from working as an actuary in the world of the Big 4 to making the move to academia and breaking glass ceilings along the way.

Leena's passion for mathematics sparked her journey to become an actuary at the age of 16, a time when the profession was relatively unknown. With a solid academic foundation, she spent over 15 years shaping the pensions landscape at KPMG and PwC. As a pension’s actuary, Leena navigated the complexities of life and death probabilities, fostering creative and innovative solutions to de-risking pension schemes. Motivated by a desire to share her expertise and inspire the next generation, Leena made the leap to academia in 2013.

Blending industry insights with academic rigour, she brings real-world challenges to the lecture theatre. The dynamic world of academia allows Leena the freedom to explore new ideas and ignite the minds of current and future professionals. At the University, Leena has taken on diverse roles, from leading the Actuarial Science discipline to setting and shaping international policy framework for STEM programmes as the Dean of Internationalisation for the College of Science & Engineering. Currently serving as the Head of Computing & Mathematical Sciences, Leena's journey has been about breaking glass ceilings at every turn, driven by a relentless mission to pave the way for others.
