This online discussion event explores how fashion activists - from social entrepreneurs and independent designer-makers, to community arts organisations and academic researchers - are working to rethink the fashion system from the ground up. We introduce Activist Creatives, a new project bringing together artists, activists and researchers in West Yorkshire, Manchester and Oslo investigating the potential of alternative, pro-environmental fashion activism. The event features speakers from Manchester Fashion Movement, The Design Studio, Stitched Up, WOVEN and Thread Republic, who are raising awareness about the damaging effects of clothing consumption and waste on people and planet and inspiring communities to take action on sustainable fashion. Academics from Oslo Metropolitan University, Manchester Metropolitan University, and University of Bradford will also share their research into the relationship between people, place, fashion and wellbeing, and how this could act as a catalyst for change.

We invite all workshop attendees to bring along a craft project and to stitch, knit, crochet or create in whichever way you choose while you listen.

Please note that panellists will be sharing stories of lived experience and at times will touch on mental health, loss and suicide. We will remind attendees of this ahead of the event, and if you wish to take a break from the session at any time you can.
