Shadowgraphs: Plants at the Advent of Photography (Plant-Human Research Network: Workshop Series CIDRAL 2024-25)
Wed 2 Apr 2025 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Mansfield Cooper, 4th Floor Archaeology Lab
Description
Organiser: Dr Claire Reddleman (claire.reddleman@manchester.ac.uk)
First used in 1842, the cyanotype or ‘shadowgraph’ was the early photography technique used to create the first book to use photographic illustrations - Anna Atkins' Algae of the British Isles. Plants - specifically seaweed - therefore stand at the inaugural moment of photographic publishing history. This practical workshop gives us the opportunity to make cyanotypes using plant specimens and to consider the materiality of the photographic process.
(Please note: Events in this series are open to University of Manchester staff and PGRs only)
