Wed 1 May 2024 10:00 AM - 1:15 PM
Board Room, Barber House, 387 Glossop Road, Sheffield, S10 2HQ
Description
What is this sandpit event about?
This event aims to connect a multidisciplinary group of researchers with an interest in the experience of rare cancers. The goal is to bring together academics from across the University, including those with clinical interests in rare cancers as well as academics from disciplines who do not normally work in this field. For example, disciplines relating to the built environment where there may be a cancer risk such as architecture, disciplines relating to social and political science, and humanities such as history and literature.
The event will be run by the Mesothelioma UK Research Centre in collaboration with colleagues at Weston Park Hospital with expertise in rare cancers. The event will be a multidisciplinary ‘think tank’ focusing on enhancing patient and family experience and voice in rare cancers. The session is part of a programme of events developed for the fifth theme of the University cancer research strategy on enhancing patient experience and voice, co-led by Stefania Vicari and Dr Catriona Mayland.
What will the programme be?
During the session we will learn about research activity in the experience of rare cancers, using the examples of mesothelioma and gestational trophoblastic disease We will share and discuss research gaps in this field and potential interdisciplinary collaborations. Attendants will be invited to pitch their research ideas and discuss potential research collaborations and project developments. We hope to bring together researchers from all disciplines across the university and clinical professionals, at all career stages. Confirmed speakers are Sarah Hargreaves, Research Associate (Mesothelioma UK Research Centre), Jane Ireson, NIHR doctoral fellow in Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (Weston Park Cancer Centre), Clare Warnock, Researcher in Residence, Cancer Experience (Weston Park Cancer Centre) and Bethany Taylor, Research Fellow (Mesothelioma UK Research Centre).
