Talk 1 - Salir Adelante /Moving Forward Documentary-Pia Riggirozzi and David Owen.
This talk will involve an introduction to, and showing of, the documentary Salir Adelante / Moving Forward, directed and produced by Bruna Curcio in collaboration with the ESRC-funded Redressing Gendered Health Inequalities of Displaced Women and Girls (ReGHID) at the University of Southampton. Salir Adelante / Moving Forward is based on the stories of Venezuelan forced migrant women and girls who fled humanitarian crisis to rebuild their lives and hopes while experiencing the everyday struggles of unfamiliar and sometimes adverse places in Brazil. The documentary calls the attention to the perilous journeys to hope, safety and wellbeing they undertook as well as the failures of protection regimes and policies to redress the many risks, harms and barriers that stop migrant women and girls from enjoying the rights, dignity, and respect to which they are entitled.
It will be followed by a short talk on the current situation in Central and South America.
Professor Pía Riggirozzi, Head of Department, Politics and International Relations and Professor David Owen, Professor of Social and Political Philosophy, University of Southampton.
Talk 2- Socio-cultural constraints to sport participation amongst Afghan women migrants and refugees residing in Iran- Dr Catherine Phipps
In this talk, the sporting experiences of Afghan women migrants and refugees who reside in Iran are considered, based on interviews with nine second-generation women. The interviews aimed to explore the extent to which socio-cultural constraints to sport participation exist, with a particular focus on gender norms and how these may be constrictive to full access and enjoyment of sport spaces. Findings suggest that gender-based constraints for Afghan women largely derive from family and culture. Moreover, the resource-based constraints of time and finances are outlined from a gendered perspective and are linked to wider discriminatory practices and employment constraints for Afghan migrants and refugees. Finally, racist and discriminatory behaviours from others demonstrate the intersectionality of gender and ‘race’, impacting Afghan women migrants’ and refugees’ sporting experiences. While sport has the potential to facilitate greater feelings of belonging amongst migrants and refugees, it is clear more needs to be done to consider the complex constraints impacting women, to ensure greater inclusion in sport spaces.
