Landmarking Guildford's Queer History
Sat 9 Nov 2024 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM
New House Arts Space, GU1 4SQ
Description
Are you up for a bit of queer time travel? This event takes you on an immersive audio treasure hunt to meet your LGBTQIA+ elders.
Walk in the footsteps of lesbian and gender nonconforming icon Anne Lister aka Gentleman Jack, explore the love nest of Edward II. and Piers Gaviston, hear about the tragic story of Alan Turing, and meet Felix Holling, the trans archaeologist who ran Guildford Museum for many years.
After visiting the haunts of these and other figures of Guildford's queer history, come and mingle with the 21st-century queers at New House Art Space. The amazing community organisation Blossom is putting together a creative activity and space for socialising.
The walk will begin at New House Arts Space and is partially guided and partially self-guided through an audio app, so don’t forget to bring headphones and your phone! The walk takes around 1 hour.
This University of Surrey event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 7–16 November 2024. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
