Protecting Our Campuses: Addressing Staff Sexual Misconduct in Universities
Tue 5 Nov 2024 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM GMT
Online, Zoom
Description
Join an important and timely webinar to explore the critical opportunities and challenges facing higher education (HE) institutions, in addressing staff sexual misconduct.
This online event, running as part of this year’s ESRC Festival of Social Science, aims to drive meaningful change in HE institutions to help create safer, more accountable academic environments for everyone.
You will gain a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence, impact, and complexities surrounding sexual harassment and other forms of sexual misconduct involving HE staff—whether as perpetrators or victims.
Key topics will include the scope of sexual misconduct in higher education, the institutional barriers to effectively addressing these claims, and the legal and ethical responsibilities of HE institutions.
Experts will discuss evidence-based recommendations for next steps that universities and their stakeholders should take to combat the occurrence of staff sexual misconduct, mitigate its effects, and ultimately enhance the safety and well-being of both staff and students.
This event is open to all interested individuals, including HE staff, university officials, policymakers, advocates, and members of the public who wish to deepen their understanding of this critical issue.
Expert Speakers include:
Professor Melissa Hamilton, University of Surrey
Dr. Anna Bull, University of York and Co-Director of The 1752 Group
Professor Sundari Anitha, University of Sheffield, and member of the sexual violence task group with the University and College Union
Dr. Adrija Dey, University of Westminster and Co-Director of The 1752 Group

This includes all women (trans, intersex, and cis) as well as nonbinary, agender, and gender-diverse individuals.
Please note that this webinar will include sensitive discussions around topics of sexual harassment and sexual misconduct. We recognise that these subjects may be triggering, especially for those who have experienced victimisation. We ask that all participants be mindful of the impact these discussions may have on others.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for any form of harassment, bullying, or disrespectful behavior. Participants who violate these standards may be removed to maintain a safe space for all.
