Love Dogs, Love Nature: Rethinking the Future of Dog Walking in the Surrey Hills

We love our dogs. We love our countryside. But how can we make sure the two can thrive together?

For thousands of people, walking the dog is about much more than exercise. It gets us outdoors, supports our wellbeing, connects us with nature and gives us a reason to explore beautiful places like the Surrey Hills. But our shared countryside also needs to work for wildlife, farmers, land managers, families, walkers and many other visitors.

Join researchers from the University of Surrey, and representatives from the Surrey Hills National Landscape, at Denbies Wine Estate for a relaxed and interactive evening exploring the fascinating relationship between people, dogs and nature! 

Dr Thomas Roberts, Environmental Sociologist at the University of Surrey, will share research exploring how and where we walk our dogs, the benefits this brings to people, and the sometimes unexpected ways our choices can affect wildlife, habitats and other countryside users. He’ll be joined by experts and practitioners to explore how we might better balance the needs of people, dogs and nature.

But this isn’t just a talk – we want to hear from you too! Through real-life dog-walking scenarios, interactive discussions and a collaborative map of the Surrey Hills, you’ll be invited to share where you love to walk, the challenges you encounter and your ideas for making our countryside even better for everyone. Your experiences and perspectives will contribute to ongoing research and help shape ideas for practical solutions.

Whether you’re a dog owner, regular walker, nature lover, resident or simply someone who cares about the future of the Surrey Hills, come along and join the conversation.

No specialist knowledge is needed – just curiosity, ideas and a love of the great outdoors. Refreshments will be provided. FREE parking is available on site.
