Crafting Gender: Live Podcast and Creative Workshop

Join a special live recording of the Queer Lit podcast and enjoy an afternoon of research, conversation, and creative activities!

Dr Lena Mattheis from the University of Surrey will be joined in conversation by Professor Susan Stryker, a groundbreaking scholar and prominent voice in trans history and studies. 

Together with Dr David Griffiths and Dr Katherine Hubbard, they’ll move beyond the familiar headlines and controversies to ask bigger and more interesting questions: Where does the concept of gender come from? How has it changed? And why are gender, trans identities and gender nonconformity being debated so intensely today?

There will be an opportunity to ask questions and join the conversation – but listening is equally welcome. Whether you already know a lot about the subject or are simply curious and would like an accessible space in which to understand it better, the event is designed to encourage open-minded exploration rather than assume any previous knowledge.

Then we’ll swap conversation for creativity! Our 'Crafting Gender' social will give you the chance to get hands-on with some of the research. Explore the history and changing use of pronouns before playing with language to invent your own, discover surprising connections between inkblots, intersex and the history of sexology, and turn your ideas and responses into something creative to take home.
