Refugee Voices from World War II: Cultural Crossroads in Dorking (Workshop 2-3pm)

Join us for this day of creativity and discovery of Surrey’s long history of refugee solidarity.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage with the lives of refugees during WWII and to reflect on their own understanding and experience in the present through zine-making. Using collage, text and images, the workshop will show you how to create your own zine using the archive as prompt material for inspiration.

Led by facilitator Dr Teresa Pilgrim, the event will explore the Dorking Refugee Committee Archive and research by Dr Beth Palmer and Prof. Constance Bantman. Make sure you also explore the all-day pop-up exhibition  in the Museum (10am-4pm), about the fascinating activities of the WWII Dorking Refugee Committee.

Age 16+ ; all abilities welcome.

Please note that this event will take place in the Museum's archive, which is located upstairs and has limited accessibility.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 5-14 November 2026. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
