Storytelling workshops for 'Returning to learning' and Mature students
Need help?
This event is one of several activities for mature students being offered by the Student Engagement and Enhancement team to celebrate Lifelong Learning Week 2024. By mature student, we usually mean around age 21+ at the beginning of your undergraduate degree, or 25+ for postgraduates.
Tell your story - Creating Voice Storytelling Workshops
Would you like to tell your story and learn creative storytelling and writing techniques, in a safe and supportive space with other mature students?
We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to take part in these workshops led by Sussex alumni, PhD researcher and professional storyteller Jon Mason. Follow the links to find out more about Jon’s research and storytelling.
Introduction to storytelling: playful exercises to cover storytelling techniques such as choice of language, structuring a narrative, deciding on a story you want to tell, and getting inside the story to look at it from different perspectives.
- 4pm-6pm on Tuesday 12th November for an introduction to storytelling structure and perspectives.
Sharpening your skills in your area of interest: creative writing and/or spoken storytelling, and sharing your story with other participants.
- 4-6pm on Tuesday 19th November: Hone your skills at turning ideas into the written word! Fiction, life stories, poetry and more, across all genres; whether you're an experienced writer or fancy having a go!
- 4-6pm on Tuesday 26th November: Try some traditional tale-telling spoken-word storymaking. Boost your speaking and performance skills with body, voice and confidence - whatever your level of experience.
Venue: Woodland 3, in ground floor rear corridor of the Student Centre.
Tea, coffee and snacks included!
These workshops are part of the Student Engagement & Enhancement team’s programmes to support students of all backgrounds to find their space and voice at Sussex. After participating in the workshop we will ask if you are – optionally - happy to share the piece you produce for use within the university, to support staff to learn more about your experiences as a student, and/or at a public exhibition of creative work by Sussex students taking place next summer. If you use Instagram, you can see a story from last year's exhibition here.
