Title: Which is king: cash or cash burn? Investment-liquidity trade-off in VC-backed startups
Abstract:
Early-stage startups face a fundamental trade-off: investing aggressively to accelerate growth depletes liquidity needed to hedge against refinancing risk. We study this trade-off using hiring intensity -- the rate of new hiring relative to the amount of capital raised in a financing round -- as an inverse proxy for post-financing liquidity buffer. Hiring intensity varies substantially across startups and strongly predicts every major dimension of startup success, including next-round continuation, valuation growth, successful exits, product-market success, and long-term employment expansion. A double machine learning analysis shows that these relationships remain robust after flexibly controlling for a rich set of observable startup, founder, investor, and employee characteristics. Our findings are consistent with a signalling model in which high-quality startups credibly reveal their type by committing to operate with minimal liquidity buffers.
