Agnes Flues Annual Memorial Lecture

In August 2024, Agnes Flues, our University and College Union (UCU) Branch President from 2020 to 2023 and a member of the UCU national executive committee from 2023 onwards, died prematurely. A principled trade unionist through and through, she was fearless in challenging management and courageous in leading industrial action at the University of Nottingham (UoN). To honour her memory, the local UCU branch at UoN decided in Autumn 2024 to establish an Agnes Flues Annual Memorial Lecture on trade union issues. Our first lecture was given by Mick Lynch, former Secretary General of the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT),
Howard Stevenson
Howard Stevenson, Emeritus Professor at UoN, has been involved in researching trade unions over many years. He is also a past-President of University of Nottingham UCU branch, and co-author of 'Lessons in Organising: what trade unionists can learn from the war on teachers'. In this Agnes Flues Memorial lecture Howard will explore how trade unions can build their power, in workplaces and in communities, by strategically developing workplace leadership. The lecture will draw on his recent report for the European Trade Union Committee for Education on union renewal (written with Alessandro Arienzo, University of Naples) and his work with UCU as co-ordinator of the union's 'Building to Win' initiative.
