Description

Dance Conversations

An Intergenerational dance project, bringing community and professional dance artists together.

Call for Participants
Upper Norwood Library Hub and Se19DanceProject invite people from our community interested in joining our new initiative, Dance Conversations – an Intergenerational Dance Project.

You will participate in regular dance workshops, during which participants will explore contemporary dance and choreographic tools.

Throughout the year there will be 3 blocks of 10-week long workshops, held once a week, with each block culminating in a different form of sharing:

Block 2 (10 weeks) Winter 2022
During this block you will improve your technique, work with guest artists to explore various ways of creating choreography and collectively create a dance film.

Block 3 (10 weeks) Spring/Summer 2022
During our final block we will be devising a performance, drawing from what we learnt in Blocks 1 and 2.

Date and Timings
Mondays 6:45pm - 8:45pm

Who can take part in Dance Conversations?
People aged 16+ from all backgrounds and abilities. Experience will be great but not essential. We make sure our classes are fully accessible to provide safe for all abilities.

Who is this project for?
Anyone who is interested in dance, wanting to try something new, explore contemporary dance technique or learn how we use movement to create meaning and stories.

Do I need to have a dance experience?
No, you don’t, we welcome participants with no dance experience prior! However it is great if you do have some movement/dance experience, as you will have opportunity to develop it further.

Cost for the 10 weeks

  • Block booking 10 weeks: £100
  • Taster: £11.50

*TASTER tickets available- due to the nature of the project, please only book ONE taster per term.

What will I learn?
You will learn the basics of contemporary dance and will be introduced to new choreographic tools.

What the workshops will consist of?
Physical warm up and introduction to technique, elements of improvisation, discussions and creative tasks.

PROJECT LEADER:
Ania Straczyńska:
I am a choreographer and dance facilitator with an MFA Choreography (distinction) from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. My work has been commissioned by The Place Theatre, Rose Theatre Kingston, Chisenhale Dance Space, P21 Gallery and Roehampton University (to name a few). I have been working as a dance teacher/facilitator for organisations such as The Place, DanceWest, East London Dance School and Sutton College, working with a diverse group of participants from preschoolers to the elderly. I am the founder of SE19DanceProject, whose mission is to help local people in the Crystal Palace/Penge area to access arts and, specifically, dance, without the need to travel to central London. We create opportunities for locals to engage in dance, providing an opportunity to connect with one another. All our projects are accessible, and provide a safe space of creative inclusion.

Guest artists:
During the Block 2 you will also have an opportunity to work with guest artists who will introduce you to their creative practice. You will therefore learn diverse approaches to working with movement and creating choreographic work.
