Join UNLH for its first interactive community lab session exploring artificial intelligence and the role it plays in children's lives! Our community lab is an inviting space for community members to learn about emerging technologies that will affect their lives and discuss what they can do in response. No prior knowledge or experience in the topic is needed, just bring your own perspective and curiosity.

This session will feature a talk and Q&A from Dr Jun Zhao, a Senior Researcher at Oxford University, followed by an interactive discussion on how you can take action at home, and what you want to see from local authorities, technology makers, and the UK government. Free food and refreshments will be provided.

Doors open: 2:00pm

Event start time: 2:30pm - 4.30pm

Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Suitable for people age 14 plus

Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems and related algorithmic systems are starting to play a variety of roles in the digital life of children - being embedded in the connected toys, smart home IoT technologies, apps, and services they interact with on a daily basis. Going forward, AI systems will, in all likelihood, become even more pervasive in children’s applications due to their sheer usefulness in creating compelling, adaptive, and personal user experiences. Yet, understanding the ways that AI-driven systems used by children operate, and how AI could be designed to better anticipate and respond to children’s diverse requirements is still new. In this talk, Dr Zhao of Oxford University will share the latest research of how AI systems are affecting children’s online experiences, how existing research and legislations are addressing challenges associated with this deluge of AI applications, how we are currently tackling them, and what it may mean for you and our society.

Biography of speaker

Dr Jun Zhao is a Senior Researcher in the Department of Computer Science at Oxford University. Her research focuses on investigating the impact of algorithm-based decision making upon our everyday life, especially for families and young children. Her area of expertise includes user-centred methodologies and technical development related to data governance. She has written extensively for premier academic conferences and journals, regularly advised on government agencies and NGOs, and been involved in several IEEE and W3C standard developments.

The UNLH Community Lab is designed to support community decision-making, offering community members a chance to better understand and shape the emerging technologies that will be a part of their daily lives. The Lab will host five sessions across the year on various topics related to AI and its impact on society. The Lab is in partnership with the Responsible Technology Institute at Oxford University and Orbit - RRI Ltd, funded by the Minderoo programme.
