The Urban Commons: Rights and Citizenship in the City from the Medieval to the Modern
Please note: we can only guarantee dietary requirements are met for those who booked before Friday 29 August.
Our 2025 conference represents a particularly exciting moment as the former Pre-Modern Towns Group conference is now incorporated with the Urban History Group. The conference has two elements: the Main Theme – which this year looks at the history of urban commons and public space – and a New Researchers strand that welcomes papers from ECRs on any aspect of urban history.
Venue
- Panels and plenaries will be in the Ken Edwards building (please note, the main ground-level entrance is on floor 2).
- Registration, lunches and the evening drinks reception will be in the Percy Gee building (Students' Union).
- How to get to the University of Leicester campus.
- The University has a multi-storey car park a short walk from the main campus.
Programme
- The programme will be uploaded to the UHG website soon.
Catering
- Lunch, tea, and coffee will be provided during the conference.
- Delegates are invited to a drinks reception on the evening of Thursday 4 September, kindly funded by the Urban History journal.
- For the evening meal, there are plenty of local restaurants, cafés, and pubs/bars near the university campus. These include Queen's Road (local independents), London Road (local independents), and St Martin's Square (independent and chain restaurants) in the city centre. A list of local restaurants will be uploaded to the UHG website.
Hotels/accommodation
There are plenty of hotels within walking or wheeling distance of the University, including the Belmont Hotel on New Walk, and Premier Inn and Hotel Ibis.
Accessibility
- Panel sessions will be on multiple floors and lifts are available.
- If you need an accessible space on campus, please email the Parking Office two working days before the conference.

Registration closes on Thursday 28 August.
