Drawing Trees: An Experimental Approach

An experimental drawing workshop led by Ruth Broadbent

A fun and experimental online drawing workshop, inspired by an imagined walk around a park. We will zoom into the trees, observing closely, looking up, drawing as we go. If you are searching for ideas on how to approach walking and drawing in a creative and experimental way, this workshop will offer a range of techniques for you to try out on your next walk.

Suitable for beginners and those more experienced.

This is the list of materials that you might like to have to hand. Feel free to improvise if you don’t have any of them. The workshop will take an experimental approach to ways of engaging with and looking at trees so all of the exercises can be adapted to a variety of materials.

- Paper (any size) - a sketchbook, or looseleaf, or improvise with other surfaces e.g. cardboard, newspaper

- Pencils

- Eraser and pencil sharpener

- Pens (any pens, including biro)

- Something that is liquid e.g. ink and brush, or twigs and coffee, plus jar of water

- Charcoal and colour materials optional

If you are able to, please also gather a handful of leaves to bring along, and if you have one, a magnifying glass, or phone with magnifier or zoom option on it. We can improvise if not.
