The UK has one of the richest populations of ancient trees in Europe and their distribution is often linked to patterns in historic land-use. Whilst forests, parklands and wood pasture may support the greatest concentrations of these living monuments, we should not overlook the importance of historically important trees that survive in urban areas. Some ancient trees are older than our most treasured monuments and architecture, and all are irreplaceable, yet many are not protected. They provide a living link to the past, as well as a range of important habitats that can boost local biodiversity. In this talk, Tom Reed (Ancient Tree Inventory, Woodland Trust) will explain the importance of our urban ancient trees, highlighting the need to do more to map them, respect them and protect them.
