Damaris Hechavarria was born in Santiago de Cuba and began her dance training at just 13 years old with the Conjunto Folklórico de Oriente. At 17, she moved to Havana to study Folklore Dance and Anthropology at the Instituto Superior de las Artes, while also performing with the renowned Franco-Haitian folklore company Ban Rarrà and teaching at CENSEA.

After graduating, she worked with Havana's Center for Theater and Dance, supporting the development of emerging talent, and became a dancer and model at the prestigious Cabaret Parisien at the Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

Since relocating to Italy in 2006, Damaris has taught, performed, and shared Cuban dance traditions worldwide, appearing at major international festivals across Europe, Latin America, and beyond. A passionate educator and cultural ambassador, she founded Alafia Dance Company and Cabaret Intensive Training Program in 2024 to preserve and promote traditional Cuban dance through contemporary interpretation and high-quality training for the next generation of dancers.
