Join VHF for a full-day educators Pro-D workshop across Vancouver exploring Black histories. Please register by February 7th!
Starting at sənaʔqʷ/Sen̓áḵw at the City of Vancouver Archives, the morning will include two presentations - a virtual talk by Fran Morrison from the BC Black Awareness Society of BC and a presentation from writer and artist, Joy Russell. We'll learn more about the City of Vancouver Archives in a short presentation and behind-the-scenes tour. We'll take the False Creek ferries to the False Creek flats, walk to our lunch spot in Chinatown, Juke's Fried Chicken and enjoy a walking tours with Hogan's Alley Society and John Atkin through the Strathcona neighbourhood, with a visit to Rise Up Marketplace and end at Main St and Union St.
Overview of the Day
Morning: On-site at the City of Vancouver Archives (1150 Chestnut St)
- Registration at 8:45 am
- 'Black Histories of British Columbia: Explore-Discover-Learn-Share' Zoom presentation by Fran Morrison, BC Black History Awareness Society at 9 am
- In-person presentation and Q&A by Joy Russell, Writer, Poet, Artist and MA Student at SFU entitled Swimming Against the Tide: The Archive, Regulation and Resistance in Aquatic Recreation at Crystal Pool and ‘Brown Skin Beach’
- Presentation and behind-the-scenes tour with City of Vancouver Archives staff
Travel from Vancouver Maritime Museum Harbour to Science World via False Creek Ferries (~30 minute ride)
Lunch at Juke's Fried Chicken (182 Keefer St)
Afternoon: Exploration of Strathcona neighbourhood
- Walking Tour around Strathcona with Hogan's Alley Society members, focusing on their current work (~60 minutes)
- Neighbourhood Walking Tour of Strathcona with local historian John Atkin, including a visit to Rise Up Marketplace (704 Vernon Dr)
- Session concludes at 4 pm around Main St and Union St
This full-day session will take place rain, shine or snow and the afternoon will be spent outdoors so please dress for the weather! Participants will encounter a variety of terrain including uncontrolled road crossings, gravel, stairs, slopes, as well as wooden docks and embarking/disembarking the tug-boat style ferries with minimal assistance (False Creek Ferries are regrettably not wheelchair accessible). Please note that this tour will cover approximately 6-7 kilometers of walking over 4 hours. Further details, including information on parking, will be provided to registrants closer to the event date.
Please note this is a mask-friendly event and that the starting and end points of this workshop are at different locations.
Registration opens January 16 at 12pm and spots will be limited. Registration closes at February 7 at 5pm or when sold out.

VHF recognizes educators as a diverse field and not exclusive to district school teachers.
