VHF’s Heritage Hour (formerly Evening Lectures) are a series of talks focused on local heritage. In this special edition of our Heritage Hour, please join us at Chin Wing Chun Society from 7pm to 8:30pm on November 26th, 2024.
Tuesday, November 26th|Places of Belonging: Looking at Chinese Societies in Vancouvers' Chinatown
Many visitors go to Vancouver’s Chinatown in search of Chinese cuisine and specialty shops. But beyond these building's facades, a visible yet commonly overlooked fabric lines the streets.
Chinese Societies played an integral role throughout the lives of new immigrants that the Societies’ names are often written on the tombstones of deceased Chinese buried in Canada. Using his volunteer experience in one of the oldest clan Chinese Society, Chin Wing Chun Tong Society, join Larry Kin Fah Chin, as he provides insights on the purpose and importance of these spaces.
Please note: The event venue is a heritage building and has limited accessibility options. Unfortunately, the venue is not equipped for mobility devices and guests will need to ascend four flights of stairs to reach the Main Hall.

About the Speaker:
Larry Chin is an award-winning filmmaker, professional photographer and active volunteer in Vancouver’s Chinatown neighbourhood. He has co-directed a number of documentaries including, Keys to Living Heritage, which highlights Chinese Societies in Vancouver’s Chinatown and Strathcona neighbourhoods. He currently sits on the Board of Directors at Chin Wing Chun Society of Canada, Vancouver Tsun Tsing (Hakka) Association and Chinese Canadian Historical Society of BC.
