VHF’s Heritage Hour (formerly Evening Lectures) are a series of talks focused on local heritage. Join us at University Women's Club at Hycroft Manor this spring from 7 pm to 8:30 pm to enjoy fascinating pieces of Vancouver’s history with a selection of local speakers.
Thursday, April 10th|Learning Heritage: An Evening with Robert Lemon
Robert Lemon’s memoir “An Architect’s Address Book” (ORO Editions) chronicles the places he has lived while studying and practicing architecture, specializing in heritage preservation. This illustrated talk will focus on his learning about heritage during his studies in Ottawa, Paris, London, Rome and York (UK). To encourage such studies for a younger generation he has established the VHF Robert Lemon Heritage Studies Prize.
About the Speaker:
Robert Lemon is a retired architect AIBC who spent his four-decade career in Vancouver, including a time as Senior Heritage Planner for the City of Vancouver. He has been involved with the VHF since its creation in 1992 and has served on the board of directors and as its chair. He now lives in Stratford Ontario.
Tickets will be on sale until April 10th at 4pm.
Tuesday, May 20th| The Hollywood Theatre: A Development Love Story
Join Michelle Barila, the Executive Director of the West Broadway Business Improvement Association (WBBIA), as she shares the story of the Hollywood Theatre. This talk will highlight the story of survival of the iconic theatre, community superheroes, and constructive development practices to support the place we love.
About the Speaker:
Michelle Barile is the Executive Director of the West Broadway Business Improvement Association (WBBIA, representing over 300 businesses and 100 commercial properties on West Broadway. She has a background that includes graphic design, marketing and events, street beautification, strategic planning, and advocacy to support small businesses. In 2024, she received the King Charles III Coronation Medal award; in 2020, she received the Kitsilano Neighbouhood House Good Neighbour Award; and in 2010, 2015, and 2019, she received BIABC’s Best in the West Awards for various BIA projects.
