We are excited to invite teachers and educators to explore Hastings Park’s varied histories and the site of the 1942 Japanese Canadian detainment in a three-part session on October 21st.
Two walking tour options are offered in a 9am - 11am or 1pm - 3pm timeslot. Participants are welcome to book a single tour or both for the full day. The Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre Society will give a presentation at 11am-11:30am and repeated at 12pm-12:30pm for all participants (no booking required).*
All proceeds go towards VHF’s Schools Program.
Tour with Nikkei National Museum Education Program Developer, Carolyn Nakagawa | Walk through the grounds of Hastings Park where over 8000 Japanese Canadians were detained in 1942. Learn about who was detained in Hastings Park, the site's makeshift transformation into a detention centre, how Japanese Canadians organized to make it more liveable, and the ways that later generations have fought to make this aspect of the park's history visible for visitors today. Choose the morning or afternoon session.
Tour with Civic Historian John Atkin | Over the PNE’s almost 140 year history the site has seen significant changes. Together we will explore how the fair ground has evolved to become both a neighbourhood park and home to the annual fair. Choose the morning or afternoon session.
Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre Presentation* | Members of the Japanese Canadian Hastings Park Interpretive Centre will present their plans for a public interpretive centre inside the Livestock Building from 11am-11:30am and again from 12pm- 12:30pm. Consultation and feedback from the public, in particular educators, are welcome. Displays and resources will be accessible between 11am-1pm.
Lunch Break Participants are welcome to bring their own packed lunch or go off-site during the lunch break from 11am - 1pm. You are welcome to eat during the outdoor walking tours, but lunch and drinks will be consumed outdoors during the lunch break.
