The myth of the sirens is unravelled in this subversive contemporary opera; The creatures who enchant men to their death with their singing voices, reimagined from a modern feminist perspective.
"The sirens' presence in Homer’s "Odyssey" is brief yet unforgettable. Once deadly vocalic creatures luring sailors to their demise, they have since transformed into the seductive yet sinister mermaids of modern lore—wet, sexy, and evil—stripped of their all-knowing voice.
"Sirena" shatters this myth and its legacy, inviting the audience into the world of three contemporary sirens.
Written for voice and electronics, this contemporary opera explores life with a voice that is both enthralling and lethal—a journey that is, at times, exhilarating, devastating, comical, and excessive. From sugar daddies and cabaret to existentialism and the mind-body divide, "Sirena" challenges the historical treatment of the feminine voice, unleashing full power and potential to the sirens.
