Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be in a queer relationship in Victorian times? What about the far future? Well, we had no idea either, so we made some stuff up. If you like history, this has something for you. If you like sci-fi, this has something for you. If you like comedy, this is definitely for you.
‘The Homosexual’s Guide to the Galaxy’ is a queer comedy exploring how relationships and prejudices may change over time. The play follows two couples living parallel lives in very different time periods. In the Victorian era, flamboyant painter Jonathan and vicar’s son David are navigating their relationship against the backdrop of the Oscar Wilde sodomy trial. Jonathan wants to persuade David to run away and live in secret together, but David must overcome his fears of his father, Hell, and, worst of all, the town of Reading.
Meanwhile, in a distant future where humans have spread across galaxies (but still find ways to be prejudiced), human engineer Avi meets the well-travelled and mysterious alien Atha. Atha wants to show Avi the wonders of the universe, but Avi must decide if they are prepared to risk being cast out of their colony if their relationship is discovered.
When a spaceship crash tears a narratively convenient hole in the space-time continuum, the two couples (played by the same two actors) meet and discover they can learn from each other. Cultural exchanges, mistaken identities, and a lot of quick changes ensue.
