Portraiture: step by step
This 5 week series will focus on classical techniques around portraiture, and look at how modern artists have developed these further. If you’ve been frustrated that your faces don’t feel convincing, these sessions will break the art of portraiture down into tried and tested, step by step processes. The teachers are both practising artists and art teachers who work at Brentford’s Johnson’s Island Art Studios. The classes are held in the bright and spacious setting of the Great West Gallery.
Basic drawing and oil painting materials will be provided but please feel free to bring your own if you wish. We will send out a list in advance of materials for the session.
Week 1, 2nd Nov. To paint portraits, artists' classically start with the bone structure. Students will be taught to observe and draw skulls as a solid starting point.
Week 2, 9th Nov. To help simplify the broad areas of the face, in this session we will be breaking down the face into planes of light and shade.
Week 3, 16th Nov. A focus on proportions and the details that help make a likeness
Week 4, 23rd Nov. How do you bring skin to life with use of colour? Using oil paint we will explore painting different skin tones
Week 5, 30th Nov How have artists taken these classical techniques and developed them into their own style
